From the website
"The NGT was hearing a plea filed by Punjab resident Rajinder Singh and others challenging the EC granted to the Ambuja plant in Daburji village of Ropar district for expanding its cement grinding unit from 2.5 to 3.4 million tonnes per annum, claiming it would further pollute the atmosphere in the nearby villages."
Confirmed- problems still ongoing. Nothing has changed. Ambuja has a huge CSR budget of 3 crore as per local contact (local contact Rajinder Singh) but nothing is spent on improving lives of those affected by the pollutions from clinker, fly ash carried by big load trucks in terms of medical assistance, check ups etc. He said the NGT has done nothing about the situation and he does not understand why. The factory is clearly in the green belt - yet the NGT is not able to make a strong case against Ambuja. He mentioned having rallied 40 villages from around to sign on the issue again last year but nothing has been done. The Ambuja foundation with its huge budget is just all for namesake and in terms of improving the situation for the villagers and poor, nothing is being done. Counsel appearing on behalf of MoEF concedes to the fact that the condition permitting the blasting in the mining area was incorporated in Environment Clearance(EC) in question due to oversight. The Applicant has also further alleged that the public hearing was faulty and inappropriate in as much as the cognizance of the grievances made in the public hearing was not taken.

Spoke to Advocate Jitender Verma who was on this case and he said nothing has been done. The high court where the case was closed down (duress by ACC) along with the fact that they tried to maintain that the factory was in another district and not in the district he was arguing from. He said the land around the ACC factory along with the Sutlej River is getting polluted. Also mentioned Ambuja and Ultratech factories polluting but they are in different districts. So basically he is saying nothing has changed since the case was brought to attention to the High Court.2019

Spoke to Local Ibadul Siddiqui who is mentioned in the article. He is very hands on and is basically according to him a one man organization trying to fight pollution by the industries in this area where there are cement, coal and iron factories. It is an industry belt and he says the river, air and land is completely polluted. Especially spoke about factories dumping their sewage in the river. mentioned the local pollution and municipal board (MPCB) are all controlled by the industries and are in cahoots with them so nothing really happens or changes even if the industries are consistently served notices. He might be a good contact for ground level research and survey.2015

From the website: " In 2010, Indian Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) released the “Guidelines on Co-processing in Cement/Power/Steel Industry” which gave an official sanction for co-incineration of industrial and municipal wastes in cement plants. This directive effectively allowed cement plants across India to incinerate a range of hazardous, post-production waste like toxic sludge, tar, pesticides, spent chemicals and a variety of post consumer waste like used tyres, plastic, municipal waste etc. Nestlé’s decision followed in the footsteps of others like Unilever and Colgate-Pamolive who regularly engage cement facilities to destroy their post-processing and post-consumer waste."

air pollutionFeb. 2018: a study by published in Sustainable Environment Research (https://www.journals.elsevier.com/sustainable-environment-research/) concluded that metals found in the raw materials, fuels, and wastes which are fed to the kiln have ended up partially in the air emissions. These elements are persistent and subject to bioaccumulation in the food-chains. Exposure to these metals may be by digestive route, respiratory route, inhalation of dust, or through the pores of the skin. Constant and high dose exposure to HMs has adverse effects and can cause health problems such as cancer. Young children and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to this type of intoxication.

child laborMay 2017: According to a study by Bread for All (BFA), LafargeHolcim’s subsidiary in Uganda, Hima Cement, has allegedly benefitted from child labour among artisanal miners who supplied raw materials (pozzolana, a volcanic rock) to the company in Uganda. BFA and its partner organisation in Uganda, Twerwaneho Listeners’ Club (TLC), investigated the case and uncovered disturbing findings: a large number of children worked for over a decade in the quarries supplying pozzolana to Hima Cement. Because of mining, many children dropped out of school and did not go on to secondary school. Working in pozzolana quarries is hazardous, with most children interviewed reporting that they had experienced injuries

human rights14.08.19: UN report, by the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar, lists LafargeHolcim as having commercial ties to construction companies controlled by the Myanmar military, the Tatmadaw. Mission was able to identify 15 foreign companies that have joint ventures with Tatmadaw conglomerates. For example, the Mission has documented a commercial partnership between Thilawa Cement and Building Materials Ltd. and Sinminn Cement, a Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited (MEHL) subsidiary. Thilawa Cement and Building Materials Ltd., according to corporate filings, is listed as being owned by Lafarge, which since 2015 merged into LafargeHolcim, a French-Swiss company and the world’s largest cement manufacturer. According to corporate records, Thilawa Cement and Building Materials Ltd., and SinMinn Cement, the MEHL subsidiary, share board leadership.
LafargeHolcim's commercial ties to Thilawa Cement and Building Materials, are in violation of international human rights law, in particular, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar found strong evidence that foreign companies including LafargeHolcim, support the Tatmadaw (Myanmar military) in two ways by: i.) Strengthening their autonomy from civilian oversight and ii.) Providing financial support for operations that violate human rights[1], including the genocidal clearance operations against the Rohingya population. Given the seriousness of these findings, further investigations into LafargeHolcim's partnership with Thilawa Cement and Building Materials and its business interests in Myanmar are recommended.
